Eight researchers from Hospital Clinic - IDIBAPS and Universitat Barcelona among Clarivate's Highly Cited

The Highly Cited Researchers of Clarivate Analytics - former Branch dedicated to the Intellectual Property and Science of the Thomson Reuters agency - is one of the most reputed classifications among the international academic and scientific community. The list includes the 3,300 most relevant names in the world in 21 fields of science and social sciences, ranging from clinical medicine and neurosciences, to agriculture, the economy or the environment. Of these, 60 are researchers who work in Spanish institutions.

In its elaboration, the Clarivate Analytics library experts have analyzed the scientific articles that are between 1% of the most cited by field and year at the Web of Science (the Highly Cited Papers). This year, 130,000 articles have been taken into account in 900 institutions around the world. This international classification is also a key component of many high ranking world rankings in the university world, with now the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), better known as Shanghai's ranking.

Josep Dalmau is Professor ICREA of IDIBAPS, consultant of the Neurology Department of the Hospital Clínic and professor of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of the UB. The Rei Jaume I prize for medical research in 2017, leads the Group of Pathogenesis of Autoimmune Neural Diseases and is an international reference in the field of neurology and psychiatry. It is focused on the study of autoimmune and paraneoplastic disorders that affect the nervous system. His group has discovered a new category of autoimmune processes that cause alterations in memory, behavior and cognition, as well as being able to cause psychosis. This line of work, with a significant impact in the field of neurosciences in multiple medical disciplines, offers a connection between immune processes and neuronal functions, related to memory, behavior, psychosis, epilepsy and neuronal degeneration. These works have been key to identifying nine autoimmune diseases of the brain, describing new syndromes and associated immunological mechanisms and generating diagnostic tests that are used around the world. He is also professor of Neurology at the University of Pennsylvania, associate researcher at the National Institute of Health (NIH) and a member of the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) of the United States.

Francesc Graus is the head of the Neurology service of the Hospital Clínic, researcher of the clinical and experimental neuroimmunology team of IDIBAPS and professor of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences and the Institute of Neurosciences of the UB . Expert with an international projection in the field of the study of the immunopathogenesis of paraneophlasic neurological diseases, focuses its clinical activity on the diagnosis and treatment of brain tumors, especially of gliomas (astrocytoma, oligodendroglioma and glioblastoma) and neurological complications derived of cancer A founding member and former president of the European Neuro-Oncology Association (EANO), is the main inventor of a patent -the rights of which have been acquired by the German company Euroimmun AG- to diagnose, predict and treat patients with a autoimmune disease associated with neurodegenerative processes and sleep disorders. This patent, developed in collaboration with Professor Josep Dalmau (UB-Clínic-IDIBAPS), is based on the detection -per immunocytochemistry of transfected cells- of the presence of antibodies generated against the neuronal protein IGLON5.
